Getting Fit is like Going to Battle… You’ve Got to Plan and Execute

Just like Marines engaged in warfare, getting healthy and fit needs the same attitude.  That starts with the mission and the planning towards your fitness goal.  Part of the mission is the “reason why” you are wanting to get healthy and fit.  That sets the stage for what you do and the motivation to carry your through.

When you plan, you look for all options, including what would happen if your first option doesn’t work out.  For example, if you are not able to get to the gym, then what can you do instead?  What about food choices?  If you don’t have what you normally would eat available, what other options are available?  Sometime you will have to “adjust on the fly.”  This is true of Marines on the battlefield and true of working towards health and fitness.

Always have the right mental attitude!

Set aside some time to make that plan.  Just don’t spend all your time creating a plan and you don’t take action on it.  Too many people I know will plan and plan and plan.  They’ve planned for years on what they are going to do.  And guess what?  They do nothing.  Plans can be adjusted and should.  Information changes as do you.  Review your actions to adjust your plan.  Learn from what works and what doesn’t work.  Mistakes will happen, let them, and move on.

Enlist help before and after you go to battle in getting healthy and fit.

Experts can help and so can those closest to you.  If they don’t fit with your plan, don’t use them.  You don’t want negativity  and saboteurs to destroy your mission and plan.  Keep moving forward with the right team.

Be consistent!

Keep going and going.  Consistency counts.  Most people tend to stop before they make real progress.  Sometimes things will go well and then you’ll hit a roadblock.  This is what stops most people from going forward.  Remember, you will hit those roadblocks.  You can let it stop you or….. YOU CAN FREAKING BUST THROUGH IT WILL ENTHUSIASTIC EFFORT!!!

Take measurements along the way.  Document your progress in a journal.  When Lewis and Clark made their famous expedition to the Pacific Ocean and back, they kept a detailed journal along the way.  They documented every challenge as well as the beauty.  They documented their mistakes, supplies and what they could have done better.  That journal became the basis for future explorers and helped open the West up.

Your journal will the basis for you to learn from.  It will be your history in the health and fitness journey.  And you will learn what works and what doesn’t.

Now, create your battle plan and execute it!  Give it your best effort too!

Cheers,
